Excavation works at the V&A site have been progressing well and are now 90% complete.
The B6 basement level (and lowest level of the building) has almost been fully excavated, with just the eastern side remaining. This is no mean feat, with 130,000 cubic metres of sand moved out of the basement during this phase of construction. V&A is unique in having six basement levels, as most developments only have three or four; this means more parking for residents.
Watch the June construction update
In the coming weeks, the next steps are to finish the full excavation and commence the sheet piling on the lift cores (the sheet piling has already arrived on site). The west tower core and lift will commence first, followed by the east tower.
Afterwards, construction will begin on the 800mm thick B6 raft slab, which will see 4,800 cubic metres of concrete poured over the next few months.
Pre-planning for the tower crane is also complete, which will be a significant milestone for the V&A build. The first tower crane to due to be put in place and start work in mid-June, with another two tower cranes to be added over the coming months.
